Welcome to the 26th International congress of the European Association for Endoscopic surgery (EAES) in association with the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ALSGBI). In an era of expanding numbers of meetings we are honoured you have chosen to attend this congress.
The history of surgery has been punctuated with game changing advances such as the development of anaesthesia, aseptic technique and minimal access surgery. With laparoscopy long-established in the surgical toolkit, the surge in the development of new surgical techniques and technological platforms including robotics may now represent the natural progression of laparoscopy. However, we must not ignore the opportunity for so called “marginal gains”. Whilst we would all love the one change in our practice that dramatically improves our outcomes, the reality of clinical practice and the world of sport have demonstrated to us that the benefits of smaller improvements should not be overlooked. Some changes may individually only make small differences but they add up to a much greater cumulative effect. 10 minor performance improvements of 1% is as good as the much trickier single improvement of 10%.
Therefore this year whilst our congress will continue to focus on the latest and biggest technological advances, we shall also be focussing on the smaller gains. Good practice that can be shared and adopted and then may ultimately add up to being something much greater than we could ever expect.
We hope you enjoy your time at the congress and your visit to London.
