Joint EAES-IFSO Symposium at the 22nd world congress of IFSO

The 22nd World Congress of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO) has taken place at the QEII Centre in London from 29 August – 2 September 2017. During that World meeting, the European Association Endoscopic Surgery (EAES) had the chance to renew its collaboration with IFSO and shared the joint EAES-IFSO symposium on Thursday 31st of August.

The session was chaired by Dr. Nathan Zundel (Past-IFSO President), Dr. Nicola Di Lorenzo, Dr. Ramon Vilallonga and Dr. Gianfranco Silecchia. During the session, a focus on variate topics was shared by many experts. Dr. Manoel Galvao Neto, one of the major bariatric endoscopists discussed about the role of endoluminal approach and new technologies in an excellent talk “Is endoluminal the right approach?”. Dr. Michel Gagner reviewed clearly the causes and management of bleeding (“Can we better control postoperative bleeding in bariatric surgery?”).

Dr. Catalin Copaescu, our EAES treasurer, an international expert in bariatric surgery, focused on the “Solutions for chronic fistulas after sleeve gastrectomy” including laparoscopic and endoscopic approach. Dr. Michel Vix, from IRCAD focusing on training, showed many “Tips and tricks for proper bowel positioning in bypass procedures”. This lecture was very interesting including very good educational videos. Dr. Nicola Di Lorenzo, EAES’ General Secretary, reviewed the “Portal vein thrombosis after bariatric surgery” and finally Dr. Ramon Vilallonga, currently chairing the communication and media committee and international bariatric surgeon, focused on robotic technology discussing the role of robotics in revisional surgery (“Is Robotics a better tool for revisional surgery? “).

Bariatric surgery has gained very important interest among our members from EAES and a special coverage is done yearly at the EAES meeting.

In the overall, the joint symposium was a great way to stimulate collaboration among members of both Society and Federation. The different talks were very appreciated by the audience and future initiatives should continue in the next meetings.
